I’ve been at Kuta Beach for almost a week now and I only saw the sunset the first night. I decided I definitely needed to change that so my friend and I took a nice walk down the beach to watch the sunset. It was incredible and although some of the clouds were in the way a bit, I think it really added to sunset. The colors were insane as well and I caught this fisherman getting a little fishing in before the last remnants of the light were gone.

My friend Stephanie and I went on a night hike to Mount Batur, an active volcano, early this morning to see the sunrise. We woke up around 2 AM and began hiking around 4 AM in complete darkness. It was one of the most incredible things I have ever done! We were the first ones to the top and thus had prime seats to witness the beautiful sunrise over the other volcanoes.
A few days earlier, a Swedish man fell into the volcano, probably doing something stupid, and died, so naturally we weren’t allowed to explore a little further, but I took a pic of these hikers who had opted for the long day of hiking (of course, going around the dangerous area the Swede encountered).

A lady making an offering on Kuta Beach
The Hindu people are very good about making offerings five times a day. Walking through the streets, you will surely find yourself almost stepping (and sometimes accidentally stepping) on little offering boxes made out of palm leaves. I see pigeons pecking at the crackers and cookies left in the boxes and sometimes there are fifty little boxes all heaped up in a corner because no one picked them up.
But nonetheless, it was very spiritually inspiring to see their dedication to their religion.
I caught this lady making an offering on the beach. They way she knelt and prayed looked so peaceful even among the hecticness of Kuta beach.

Caught in a torrential Downpour at Kuta Beach
My friend Stephanie and I had a successful day of surfing. We both wiped out continuously and kinda sorta stood up once or twice. When we decided to call it a day, we were caught in a freak monsoon and had to take cover under a very shoddy juice stand.
We were stuck there for over an hous so I figured this was a good time to capitalize on the falling water and shoot a couple pics.

Relaxing on Kuta beach today, I spotted these two little boys playing in the sand. The way they were staring out into the ocean and at the surfers made it look like they wished they could be out there too. I have no doubt that these kids have tried surfing (I saw countless little Indonesian boys ripping the waves apart) and are in the water almost every day, but I just thought they were adorable!

Kuta beach is lined with hundreds of surfboards and you can’t walk through the sand without being offered one. I wasn’t quite up to venturing out of my comfort zone yet and attempting to surf for the first time in six years, and honestly for the first time ever really (the first couple times I learned to surf I was young, stubborn, and afraid to be under water and definitely came nowhere near standing up).
I vowed to myself that I would in fact rent a surfboard one of the days I was in Kuta.
I just had to work up the courage first.

The tables and tables full of people eager to eat some delicious seafood
When we arrived in Kuta, we already had plans to attend a seafood dinner on the beach in Jimbaran. We headed over early to get some drinks in us and well before the extravaganza began. There were no tables on the sand and we looked to be one of the few parties there, but that changed once the sun started going down.
Each of the restaurants started shuttling tables out to the sand and the tables soon filled up as we watched a beautiful sunset. The seafood was of course amazing and the company was even better!
What a fun first night in Kuta!

How fake does this look?!
Around Lovina, there is a natural Hot Springs, where warm water spews out of dragons head and the smell of hard boiled eggs and sulfur fills the air.
But really, its quite nice.
Exploring the grounds a little bit, we happened across this crazy-looking spider. I didn’t believe that it was real! Its head or butt or whatever it is looks like a Balinese mask! I wonder if he just adapted to his surroundings!

A couple enjoying the peacefulness of the water in Lovina
We headed up to Lovina today, a beach in the north of Bali, where I saw a black sand beach for the first time. The town was extremely quiet and walking along the coastline reminded me of the good ole days on Ko Jum in Thailand, where I could walk for miles and barely come in contact with other people.
Although Lovina was a little different of course.
There was construction a foot on brand new resorts and housing complexes right on the beach and there were tons of boats just waiting for tourists to explore the waters (like this boat here) and search for the dolphins (one of the main attractions in Lovina).
Apparently it gets pretty crowded June and Julyish, but it definitely seems like its an up and coming place to be!
